Our dear friend and Rise Above’s co-founder, Mercedes Ramirez-Newkirk, passed away on September 21, 2012.
The true definition of selflessness, Mercedes was passionate about helping others. She always put the needs of others ahead of her own. Mercedes’ smile and joyful spirit brightened the hearts of countless friends, co-workers and the youth and families she worked with. While we have lost an irreplaceable member of the Rise Above family and we will miss her terribly, Mercedes’ smile, spirit and passion are etched forever in our hearts.
At the request of Mercedes’ family, a special fund has been set up for those wishing to donate in her name. The “Mercedes’ Legacy of Smiles” fund will support Rise Above’s mission to bring big smiles to the faces of children in foster care.
